Inspired by the bar of all bars, the American Bar by Adolf Loos in the Kärtnerstrasse in Vienna’s 1st district, super+ has developed a mobile bar in cooperation with the uns architecture studio for interiors and urban development. The bar has been reduced to its two main functions: barman meets lonely guest and the inviting candlelight atmosphere. With a total area of 3,60 x 1,20 meters and at a height of 3 meters, the bar is entered through the four pillars surrounding the corpus. A Tiffany glass luminescent sign illuminates the entrance. Inside, one is surprised to be greeted by a mirrored and spatial effect. The entire bar forms a triumphal arc surrounding the guest. The bar is named after its first exhibition space the Ottostrasse in Munich. The name originates from King Otto of Bavaria, who reigned from 1832 – 1862 as the first King of Greece, thus strengthening the relations between the two countries. He created an infrastructure that still lingers there today, for example the residential palace by Friedrich Gärtner, which still houses the current seat of government. In a further influential deed, he introduced the first law of German beer purity, out of which the “FIX” beer by the Fuchs Brewery was created. Many happenings have taken place in the Otto bar in collaboration with other bars from Munich and Berlin. These bars mirror their own cosmos: among others, Bar Tabacco, the Maroto Bar, Bigott Bar and the Trader Vics have all served as a source of inspiration. Every evening is limited to one cocktail. These are served in the bar’s own drinking glasses created by the Technical College for Glass in Kramsach. The bar extensions with an added stoa and agora, along with constant new collaborations with artists and bars from around the world are an essential component in the further development of the bar and the project.
